Great Blue Heron

There are 72 species of heron. These elegant birds live on every continent except Antarctica.

In Norse Mythology, heron is associated with goddess Frigga , who lives in marshes and waterways. The Celts regarded this bird as a guardian of the treasures of the spiritual world. Like Japanese, the Maori of New Zealand believe that herons carry the souls of those who have died into the afterlife.

This work is created of pure British merino wool tops, and silk. It is a fine combinations of sky blue, ocean blue, water blue and the iridescent feather blue. All hand dyed and hand created, painting with wool and silk. The tapestry is set onto a hand loomed raw hemp background.

 In ancient Wales the heron, Creyer, was seen as the primal creator and giver of life. The Heron is a beautiful creature, exhibiting grace, and noble stature.

Heron prefers hunting at twilight, a symbolic and magical time of ‘in-between’. I shall have one foot on land and one in water – this being recognised by ancient cultures as a sign of – crossing into the space neither here, not there.

Solitude. Patience. Longevity. Versatility. Tranquillity. Determination. Resourcefulness. Independence. Partnership. Wisdom.

Its vibrant red crest and powerful beak represent vitality and passion. Its ability to drum on trees with intense force reflects resilience and strength. The woodpecker’s unique ability to excavate holes in wood symbolises transformation and creation. It reminds us  to tap into our inner strength and harness our passions to achieve our goals. Just as the woodpecker uses its powerful beak to create, we too have the ability to shape our lives and manifest our desires. The woodpecker’s drilling into trees can be seen as a metaphor for breaking barriers and overcoming obstacles. It encourages us to persist in our endeavours, even when faced with challenges. The woodpecker’s determination teaches us the importance of perseverance and staying focused on our dream.
